What is Addiction Competency?

It is human to be curious and to experiment with mind-altering substances. A lot of people do so safely, and in many cultures substances have been parts of religious or spiritual rituals. Wine can be served as communion and to celebrate. The list is long.

At the same time substances can create unhealthy dependencies and life long mental challenges. Some substances can trigger psychosis, judgement can be suppressed leading to unhealthy sexual encounters and overdosing can lead to death. This is common knowledge.

We believe it is up to each individual to be informed and competent in whatever they choose to do. We want to offer tools and a perspective on the many layers of trauma that can arise from unhealthy substance interactions.

While most addictions are self-medication with roots in stress, anxiety and trauma, they are not limited to substances. The same principles apply to self-medicating with sex, hoarding, shopping, work or training - when it takes over social functions and impairs work or life in general. By addressing the root causes we find a lot is resolved.

We have trained over 800 caregivers in Sweden and are an active part of Chesterfield County Jails HARP program - Helping Addicts Recover Progressively.

Now we want to offer these tools to those of you who are in dependency, or have a loved one you wish to be more competent.
